Renovate with confidence: Shannon Vos shares top reno tips Part #2
From paintbrush to blueprint, Shannon Vos has built a career on redesign and renovation.
After taking out the win on The Block with his brother Simon in 2014, Shannon turned his creative eye to interior design—no stranger to the thrill and chaos of a good reno.
He and wife Lisa took on their own challenge, transforming a four-bedroom home from the ’80s into a stylish and functional haven for their growing family. With his trademark hands-on approach, Shannon tackled much of the renovation himself and below, he shares some of the positives and challenges of renovating.
Insight #1.
Take your time with big decisions
After years of renos, Shannon says not to rush the spaces that matter most. The spaces you spend most of your time and use every day – like your kitchen, lounge room and living spaces – deserve thoughtful planning and smart investment These high-use zones should reflect your lifestyle, so take the time to get them right. Good design here will pay off for years to come.
Insight #2.
Embraces the challenges – every project has them!
Even seasoned renovators like Shannon face delays, hurdles and renovation challenges; it’s all part of the build journey. Whether it’s discovering what’s behind an old wall, navigating supply delays, or reworking designs on the fly – challenges become part of the story.
TIP #3.
Renovation means creating a home that is perfect for you
Renovation is “using and realising the potential of a space and then working with those assets” says Shannon. It’s about making intentional decisions that support how you live, unwind, work, and connect. The materials, colours, textures and finishes we select, all help build that story.
