Over 450,000 Australians are living with a brain injury, with 1 in 45 affected.
Racing to Raise
Running the Red’s Backyard Ultra, a gruelling last‑one‑standing ultramarathon held on the NSW State Cross Country course in Kembla Grange, is no small feat. Competitors must complete a 6.7056 km loop every hour on the hour, in the ultimate challenge of physical and mental endurance, pushing their limits until only one runner remains.
This year, one dedicated father and DECO team member is taking on this ultimate test of endurance, not just for personal achievement, but to raise funds for The Illawarra Brain Injury Service (IBIS). With Red’s Backyard Ultra renowned as a test of resilience, camaraderie, and sheer determination, it provides the perfect platform to spotlight IBIS’s mission and inspire community support.
Simon's Story
Simon Pearson is first and foremost a dad, and it’s his kids who are the reason he’ll be stepping onto the start line at the Red Backyard Ultra. After a serious cycling accident on Easter Monday 2022, his journey back reshaped not only his outlook on endurance, but his appreciation for the moments that matter most with his family.
Supported every step of the way by his wife Nicole — the steady force behind the scenes — Simon has rebuilt with patience, perspective, and gratitude. Taking on the Backyard format is his way of showing his children the power of resilience, commitment, and never giving up when things get tough.
Simon is also proud to be using this challenge to raise funds for the Illawarra Brain Injury Service, supporting the vital work they do for individuals and families navigating recovery.
For Simon, this isn’t just about distance — it’s about family, gratitude, and running with purpose.
