Timber-Look Aluminium Cladding

Why choose timber-look aluminium cladding?

Timber-look aluminium gives you the look of a timber facade with the low upkeep of metal. Real timber cladding is beautiful, but it moves with the weather, needs regular oiling or painting, and can rot or attract pests over time. Timber-look aluminium keeps the woodgrain appearance and skips most of that work.

For homeowners, that means a facade that still looks like timber years later, with a quick wash instead of a re-oil. For architects, specifiers and builders, it means a lightweight, dimensionally stable material that installs quickly and holds its finish — useful on both new builds and renovations.

A few reasons it keeps coming up on Australian projects:

  • Low maintenance — no oiling, staining or sanding; wash down as needed.
  • Stable in our climate — it won’t cup, warp or split the way timber can in heat and humidity.
  • Lightweight — easier to handle and fix than many heavier claddings.
  • Fire behaviour — aluminium is a non-combustible metal, so timber-look aluminium is often specified where the look of timber is wanted but combustible materials are restricted. Always match the specific system to its test evidence — see the compliance note below.

Timber-look cladding materials compared

“Timber-look cladding” is a look, not a single material. Here’s how the common options stack up so you can pick with your eyes open.

Feature Timber-look Aluminium Real Timber Composite Fibre Cement
Look and Feel High. Woodgrain sublimated finish High. Natural grain, warm aesthetic Medium-high. Medium.
Maintenance Low. Occasional wash recommended High. Repeat maintenance like sanding and oiling Medium. Medium. Maintenance recommended.
Warps, rots, splits Very low. Does not warp, rot or split High. Possible when used externally Low – Medium. Depending on the environment Low.
Weight Light. Engineered extrusions to reduce weight, without reducing performance Medium. Variables in timber type High. High.
Lifespan High. Long lifespan Medium. Requires upkeep Medium – high. Depending on material composition High. Long lifespan
Fire Behaviour Non-combustible. Combustible. Varies – please check the material supplier. Non-combustible.
Cost Review Premium Low – Mid upfront. Ongoing upkeep after installation can add up Mid. Mid.

The short version: real timber wins on pure authenticity but asks the most of you over time. Composite and fibre cement are solid middle options. Timber-look aluminium is the pick when you want the timber look to last with the least upkeep — which is why it’s DECO’s core cladding offer through DecoClad®.

Finishes.

Timber-look aluminium comes in a range of woodgrain finishes, from natural oak and spotted-gum tones through to premium, more distinctive grains such as Curly Birch. The finish sets the whole mood of the facade, so order physical samples and view them on-site in daylight before you lock one in. Browse the full range with DECO’s DecoWood® timber-look finishes.

Profiles.

Cladding profiles change the shadow lines and the feel of a wall — from clean flat boards to V-groove and shiplap-style joints, through to batten looks.
If you want a batten or slat rhythm across a wall, that’s where
DecoBatten® timber-look battens come in alongside the cladding.

Where it suits.

Timber-look aluminium works on full facades, feature walls, entries, soffits and eaves, carports and outdoor rooms. It’s a common choice on coastal and bushfire-prone builds where owners want the timber look without combustible timber — see the compliance note below.

How much does timber-look cladding cost?

DECO doesn’t publish fixed pricing, because a real number depends on your project. What drives the cost:

  • Profile and system — board profile, batten look, and the fixing system chosen.
  • Finish — standard woodgrain vs premium finishes (a premium grain like Curly Birch sits higher).
  • Wall area and complexity — total square metres, plus corners, windows, and detailing.
  • Substrate and battens — what the cladding fixes to, and any packing or framing needed.
  • Installation — labour, site access, height and scaffolding.
  • Location — freight and installer rates vary by region.

How to choose and specify timber-look cladding (step by step)

Step 1: Set the look.

Decide the woodgrain tone and how “timber” you want it to read from the street.

Step 2:  Pick the profile.

Match board or batten profile to the architectural style and the shadow lines you want.

Step 3: Order samples.

Horizontal or vertical; square, rectangular or rounded battens.

Step 4: Get a quote.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Costing the battens only.
Timber oiling and repairs add up — compare whole-of-life costs.
  • Guessing the spacing.
Too wide loses privacy; too tight looks solid and costs more.
  • Skipping the council check.
Height and boundary rules can force a redesign.
  • Under-building the frame.
Long horizontal runs need proper support to ensure it is structurally sound.
  • Choosing a finish off a screen.
View your preferred woodgrain finishes as real samples in daylight and shade.

Final thoughts

Batten fencing gives you a modern, architectural fence with as much or as little privacy as you want. Decide the look and how much upkeep suits you, get the spacing right, and check your local rules before you build. If you love the timber-batten look but not the oiling and warping, timber-look aluminium gets you there with a wash instead of a weekend of maintenance.

A note on fire and "non-combustible" claims

Aluminium is a non-combustible metal, which is a large part of why timber-look aluminium is specified where the timber look is wanted but combustible cladding is restricted.
That said, any claim that a specific product or system is non-combustible or suitable for a given BAL must be tied to its actual test certificate (for example AS 1530.1) or CodeMark.
For the details on the DECO compliance check out out
compliance page.

Frequently Asked Questions: TImber-look cladding

What is timber-look cladding?

Timber-look cladding is exterior wall cladding made to look like natural timber. Most is timber-look aluminium — powder-coated aluminium with a woodgrain finish that reads as timber but performs like metal.

Is timber-look aluminium cladding good?

Yes, for most homes it’s a strong choice. You get the woodgrain look of timber with much lower maintenance — no oiling, warping or rot — and a lightweight material that installs quickly.

Does timber-look aluminium cladding fade?

Quality powder-coated woodgrain finishes are made to hold up to Australian sun.
Check out our warranty information, here.

Can DecoClad be installed horizontally and vertically?

Horizontal reads modern and vertical feels classic.
Following the DECO Installation guides, you can install either direction.

How much does timber-look cladding cost?

It depends on the profile, finish, wall area and installation. There’s no single price — ask for a supply-and-install quote based on your plans

How do you clean timber-look aluminium cladding?

A wash with mild soapy water and a soft brush is usually all it needs — no oiling or resealing like timber.

Can I use timber-look cladding in a bushfire area?
Often, yes. Because aluminium is non-combustible, many timber-look aluminium cladding systems are suitable for bushfire-prone areas. However, the system must match your site’s BAL rating.
Always confirm the product’s BAL compliance for your specific Bushfire Attack Level.
