As well as being one of Australia’s most popular coastal destinations, Byron Bay is also renowned for its organic and quality produced food products. The Byron Food Hub is a dedicated multi-unit commercial facility built to service the expansion of its Byron branded organic foods and beverages.
The client wanted the natural look and feel of timber to complement the theme and objective of an organic food production precinct, but timber was an impractical choice due to its coastal location.
As the building faces a subtropical climate, fading and corrosion from the sea salt air would have quickly damaged the building’s appeal. Additionally, the maintenance required for timber products would impose significant costs for its vendors.
To achieve a natural timber look without any ongoing maintenance, DecoSlat® 90x16mm and 50x10mm finished in DecoWood® ‘American Oak’ was specified for the external slatted features on the building. Selected not only for its naturally light woodgrain appearance and low maintenance features, but the marine grade powder coating also offered extra durability and weather resistance from the sun and ocean salt spray.
